Meet Our Team

Gordon Heslop  Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine. Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. B.Vet.Med.,M.R.C.V.S.
Veterinarian

Gordon qualified as vet in England. After five years in James Herriot style practice, he migrated to Australia and settled in the Hills area. He believes that migration was one of the best decisions of his life. Recognizing that it was not possible to stay on top of both large and small animal veterinary work, Gordon opted to concentrate on small animal medicine and surgery. He has a particular interest in surgery and preventative medicine.

Gordon has been a vet for over 32 years, and happily embraces every day at work and all the new challenges that each day brings. He realises that the care of our patients extends to their owners, and endeavours to make sure that both the pet and owner benefit from all that he does. Gordon loves explaining what is wrong with his patients to you their owners in easy to understand language, using an array of models, sketches and metaphors.

The happiness of the hospitals and the staff is paramount, and Gordon fosters a friendly family atmosphere where the staff are all motivated, our wonderful clients are all welcome, and our patients receive the very best care.

Away from the practice, Gordon is never happier than when at home with his wife Helen surrounded by their menagerie of dogs, cats, ponies, alpacas and ducks while he landscapes their garden. They are also avid travelers, preferring to immerse themselves in traditional accommodation and local culture, happily recording their adventures with a keen photographic eye. Sailing – yes please, when I have the time!

Helen Heslop
Veterinary Practice Manager

Helen is a Registered (Human!) Nurse, but has now migrated across to the veterinary world. She takes care of all the behind the scenes work, in her office surrounded by four dogs. As well as ensuring that all the bookwork, rosters, work placements, etc. are complete, Helen is passionate that all the animals in our hospitals have snuggly beds, and is always adding more cat igloos and soft beds, so we can pamper your pets even more while they are in our care.

Outside work, Helen is never happier than when at home and in the garden surrounded by cats, dogs, ponies, alpacas, ducks and Australian wildlife. Helen and Gordon take great pleasure in releasing rescued and repaired turtles, echidnas and birds into the bushland on their semi-rural property.

Rebecca Pilkington  Bachelor of Veterinary Science B.V.Sc.
Veterinarian

Rebecca qualified in New Zealand over ten years ago, and started out in practice in a couple of hospitals over in Wellington. All of our clients who have been lucky enough to have their pets cared for by Rebecca, know how passionate she is with her patients. Rebecca has a particular interest in ophthalmology and endocrine (hormone) conditions like thyroid and adrenal diseases, but enjoys all aspects of medicine in cats and dogs.

Rebecca says "I really enjoy coming to the hospital each day with a great team of people who are passionate about their work. I also enjoy the interaction and relationships I am fortunate to have developed with our many wonderful clients".

Relaxation for Rebecca means keeping active (!) and includes running and bushwalking, and when she does slow down, she does so by gardening, reading and relaxing with a glass of good Australian wine.

Elizabeth Hill  Bachelor of Veterinary Science B.V.Sc (Hons Class 1)
Veterinarian

Elizabeth shone at University and left with high honours, but her skills have reached new levels since that time. In the last four years, Elizabeth has become a truly integral part of our team, impressing clients and colleagues alike, and having a wonderful caring manner with all her patients. Liz loves that every day is different and enjoys never quite knowing who or what will walk through the door. She feels that working with the rest of the team gives her immense pleasure and reward, and so brings out the very best in the care that she gives. Liz has particular interest in soft tissue surgery as well as diagnosing and correcting endocrine (hormonal) diseases, like diabetes.

Outside work, Liz has wide interests being a very accomplished violinist, and also enjoys more physical pursuits from aerial "silks" to soccer and netball, and is part of a competitive Ukrainian dance team.

Sarah Thompson  Bachelor of Veterinary Science B.V.Sc.
Veterinarian

Sarah has been with us for over eleven years. She worked in country NSW after graduating from Sydney University. Her experience there included equine medicine, and she worked as part of a team promoting a more humane treatment of sheep in Australia. Sarah's move to Sydney was our gain, and she brought with her a great sense of fun, that projects into the enthusiasm she has for work and life in general. Sarah is particularly interested in radiology (X-rays) and in wildlife, so the many injured native fauna that come to us are in great hands.

Sarah is a devoted mother to two teenage boys, but they are yet to outrun her, as she keeps unbelievably fit with sport and energetic gardening.

Louise King  Bachelor of Veterinary Science
Veterinarian
Sandra Maddren  Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
Veterinary Nurse

Sandra is our longest serving member of staff. She joined us when she first embarked on her veterinary nurse training and in the ten years since that time has become a vital part of our team. She oversees the running of our Winston Hills practice, and her calm and efficient manner ensures that all the animals have excellent care while in our hospitals. Sandra's wealth of experience makes her a favourite with all the vets when we have patients requiring extra special care. She ensures all the Xray and anaesthetic machines are in perfect working order. One of Sandra's greatest strengths is her relationships with our clients. After so many years with us, she has seen many puppies, kittens (and owners!) mature, and greets most by name and each with her welcoming smile.

Sandra has two pets, both of which she adopted. Zanna her labrador is a faithful companion on long walks and Rastus the cat waits for them both to return.

Julie McGlinn  Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
Veterinary Nurse

Julie has been veterinary nursing for  over twenty years since beginning her career in Port Macquarie. She and her partner ( Michael, a veterinarian)  went to the UK for two years and ended up staying for eight years, before the sunshine of Australia lured them back. Julie has been with us for eleven years. She enjoys all the practical aspects of day to day hospital life, particularly the care of the patients and assisting with our daily surgical cases. Julie's wealth of experience ensures that all our inpatients have the highest possible care, and her playful nature eases any concerns that any nervous pet owners might have.  Julie diplomatically guides and develops the younger staff, who blossom under her guidance.

Julie has two handsome young sons, and she loves taking them away on camping expeditions with Michael. The boys are very artistic and their creations adorn many of the walls around our hospitals.

Georgia Edwards  Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
Veterinary Nurse

Georgia works full time at our Glenhaven practice, and has been with us for three and a half years. Georgia's caring manner calms the patients, and she really enjoys watching worried pets become calmer with each successive visit. Georgia enjoys building relationships with our appreciative clients and their pets and the rest of the team. She is particularly interested in running our in-house laboratory, and using that information to care for our patients. Georgia also enjoys all the variety of native animals that come to our hospitals and the pleasure of releasing them back into the wild after a successful treatment.

At home, Georgia has a house full of pets - three dogs, including "Snags" the dachshund, a cat and an impressive aviary backing onto the bush. She is a keen waterskier and wakeboarder, and any remaining time is taken up with gardening and cooking.
